The style of Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru wines

Unique in its kind, Bâtard-Montrachet is characterized by a perfect balance between power and elegance, offering wines that are generous, precise and extremely refined. Sometimes a little austere in their youth, you have to know how to wait for them to be rewarded and understand that their reputation is fully justified.

In this superlative appellation, Chardonnay is revealed in a sunny, often deep color. On the nose, aromas open with ripe citrus, pear and stone fruit, accompanied by subtle floral notes and a distinctive minerality reminiscent of wet stone. As the wine evolves, more complex nuances of honey, almond, hazelnut and sweet spices appear, enriching the aromatic palette without ever masking the freshness of the fruit or the wine's natural density.

On the palate, Bâtard-Montrachet seduces with its full, silky texture. The attack is frank and structured, supported by lively acidity that balances the richness and prolongs the finish. Over time, the best vintages develop impressive depth and complexity, combining tension, roundness and aromatic persistence, making them ideal wines for laying down. Their bottle ageing potential can be counted in decades, depending on the vintage profile.

The terroir of Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

One of the most prestigious terroirs in all of Burgundy, the Bâtard-Montrachet appellation is located at the southern tip of the Côte de Beaune, spread over the villages of Puligny and Chassagne, a notable singularity among the grand crus of the Côte de Beaune. Situated on well-exposed, gently sloping, south-east-facing hillsides, the terroir benefits from optimal sunshine, while maintaining natural ventilation to limit excess heat and promote gradual ripening of the Chardonnay grapes. These conditions are ideal for achieving splendid concentration in the appellation's wines.

The soils are mainly composed of white and grey limestone marl, mixed with fine scree. This composition ensures good drainage and imposes moderate stress on the roots, favoring grape concentration and terroir expression. Parcels located on the Chassagne side of Bâtard-Montrachet (as is the case for the Hospices de Beaune parcel) often offer slightly rounder fruit and greater aromatic richness, while retaining the freshness and minerality typical of the climate.

Among the dozens of cuvées sold at auction and purchased by Albert Bichot on behalf of clients, the Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru Cuvée Dames de Flandres obviously holds a special place. This is one of the highlights of the auction, and the prices achieved in recent years demonstrate the enthusiasm for this singular wine, an icon of the Domaine des Hospices.

Etymology & history

The etymology of the name Bâtard-Montrachet is firmly rooted in the medieval history of the Burgundy vineyards.

The term bâtard comes from the medieval Latin bastardus, meaning a child born out of wedlock. In the case of the Bâtard-Montrachet climat and appellation, this appellation finds its source in a medieval legend widely relayed by vineyard historians: the lord of Puligny-Montrachet is said to have divided his lands between his legitimate heirs and his illegitimate child; the parcels thus allocated then took the corresponding names - Chevalier for the eldest, Les Pucelles for the daughters, and Bâtard for the illegitimate child, giving rise to the name of this climat.

The second element of the name, Montrachet, derives from the name of the hill itself, evoking the ancient Mont Rachaz or Mont Chauve, in reference to the stony, open nature of this emblematic hillside. This historical and topographical combination has given the name Bâtard-Montrachet a strong identity, both legendary and geographical, still visible today in one of Burgundy's most prestigious appellations.

Over the centuries, the Bâtard-Montrachet lands were consolidated and cultivated with vines, and the climate gradually became renowned for the exceptional quality of its whites. As early as the XVIIᵉ century, wines from this parcel enjoyed a high reputation among Burgundian wine connoisseurs and merchants. The reputation of Bâtard-Montrachet thus spread around the world.

At the Hospices de Beaune, this special parcel, offered in limited quantities each year (a maximum of a few barrels), has been commanding record prices in recent years.
