Hospices de Beaune wines in the Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru appellation
The style of Savigny wines
The wines of Savigny-lès-Beaune offer a fine balance between freshness and roundness. Easy to appreciate when young, the Premier Crus also offer good concentration and depth, with ageing potential that allows the tannins to soften and the aromas to become more complex. Crisp and fruity (raspberry, blueberry) in their youth, the wines evolve after a few years of patience towards ripe red and black fruits, spicy notes and woody or blond tobacco nuances, while retaining their natural elegance.
Ageing potential: 5 to 8 years for Savigny-lès-Beaune village, 10 to 15 years for Premiers Crus, depending on vintage.

The Savigny terroir
One of the emblematic names of the Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune grows on gently to moderately sloping hillsides at altitudes of 250 to 400 meters. The geology is varied: at the top of the slopes, we find lumpy, stony soils, sometimes enriched with ferruginous oolite, favoring drainage and grape concentration. As you descend towards the plain, the soils become more clayey and chalky, offering richness and roundness to the wines.
Most of the slopes are south-east-facing, guaranteeing optimum sunshine while maintaining relative coolness for even ripening. Some lower areas benefit from the alluvial cone of the Rhoin, while the sandier limestone soils on the east-facing slopes provide finesse and aromatic elegance. This diversity of soils and exposures is reflected in the variety of micro-terroirs that characterize the richness and subtlety of Savigny-lès-Beaune.
Here are the Savigny premier cru parcels within the Hospices de Beaune estate: Les Peuillets, Les Bas Marconnets, Les Vergelesses, Basses Vergelesses, Les Talmettes, Les Gravains, Les Serpentières.

Etymology & history
The name Savigny-lès-Beaune has its origins in the village's medieval history. Several hypotheses link "Savigny" to the Latin Sabiniacum, indicating a villa or property of a certain Sabinius, which would reflect the Roman origins and structuring of the territory from Antiquity onwards.
The first written traces of the vineyard date back to the XIᵉ century, with donations of vines made by local lords to abbeys, a sign of the importance of wine in the region's economy and culture. From this time onwards, Savigny-lès-Beaune produced mainly Pinot noir, already recognized for its finesse and balance. Over the centuries, the appellation developed over the entire hillside, consolidating its reputation as an elegant, fruity terroir, capable of producing village and Premiers Crus wines with varied profiles, depending on exposure and soil type.
This ancient history, combined with the diversity of the terroirs, explains why Savigny-lès-Beaune remains today a vineyard respected for the elegance and finesse of its Pinot Noirs, while offering a fine expression of Burgundy's micro-terroirs.
