The Hospices de Beaune cuvée in the Monthelie appellation
The style of Monthelie wines
Monthelie produces mainly supple, fruity red wines, with notes of cherry, raspberry and sometimes a light woody touch that doesn't mask their freshness and deliciousness. The Cuvée Lebelin des Hospices, sold each year at auction, is no exception. Every year, it wins over enthusiasts of this confidential, unjustly overlooked appellation, with an excellent price-pleasure ratio. Ageing potential: 5 to 10 years depending on vintage.

The terroir of Monthelie
The Monthelie vineyards are located on the southern slopes of the Côte de Beaune, overlooking Auxey-Duresses and not far from Meursault. The soil is limestone and clay, relatively deep, favoring red Pinot Noir and giving a rich aromatic expression. The southern and southeastern exposure provides good sunlight, essential for balanced fruit and tannins.
Our house, Albert Bichot, vinifies grapes purchased from this lovely Monthelie appellation. So it's with this intimate knowledge of the appellation's terroirs that we buy (almost) every year at the Hospices de Beaune auction the beautiful Monthelie cuvée Les Duresses Lebelin. As with all the Hospices de Beaune and Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges wines we buy at auction, we are very subtle when it comes to ageing these great wines for a great cause, especially when it comes to choosing the barrels in which to age them.
